Praia da Adraga – One of Portugal’s Most Photogenic Beaches

Praia da Adraga is undoubtedly one of the most photogenic beaches in Portugal. With its dramatic rock formations, open Atlantic horizon and constantly changing light, it is easy to understand why the beach attracts so many photographers.

My friend and model Polina and I recently travelled to Praia da Adraga for a varied outdoor photo shoot. We were certainly not alone. Several other photographers and models had chosen the same location that day, all hoping to make the most of the beautiful scenery and evening light.

Fortunately, there is usually plenty of room along the beach. Even with several photo shoots taking place at the same time, everyone was able to find their own setting and create something different. The rocks, cliffs, reflections and open shoreline provide an impressive variety of natural backdrops within a relatively small area.

A Sunset Photo Shoot at Praia da Adraga

For this session, the conditions were almost perfect. The light was soft and beautiful, while the wind was surprisingly gentle for a beach facing the Atlantic Ocean. When you have travelled a considerable distance for a location shoot, favourable weather makes a real difference—especially when working with a model, clothing and photography equipment close to the water.

We had planned the session carefully and selected a day when low tide coincided with sunset. At low tide, more of the beach becomes accessible, revealing wet sand, interesting rock formations and reflective surfaces that can add depth and atmosphere to the photographs. It also gives a photographer more freedom to move around and explore different compositions.

As the sun moved lower, the colour and character of the light changed from one minute to the next. This is one of the things I enjoy most about photographing at the coast. A scene can feel bright and energetic at the beginning of a session, then become soft, cinematic and slightly mysterious as sunset approaches.

Praia da Adraga is particularly well suited to this kind of photography. The landscape is dramatic enough to play an important role in the images, but it does not have to overwhelm the model. The challenge is to find the right balance between portrait and landscape—to show the character of the person while still allowing the location to be part of the story.

Photographing Praia da Adraga at High Tide

Although low tide gave us excellent working conditions, I would also like to return when high tide and sunset occur at approximately the same time. The beach would have a very different character, with waves surrounding the rocks and creating more movement and energy in the background.

High tide would require more caution and probably leave less space in which to work, but it could also produce more dramatic photographs. Long exposures of the water around the rocks would be especially interesting, as would portraits that capture the power and atmosphere of the Atlantic coast.

Every visit to Praia da Adraga is likely to produce something different. The tides, waves, clouds, wind and sunlight are never exactly the same. That unpredictability is part of what makes the beach such an inspiring location for portrait, fashion and landscape photography.

Polina and I came home with a varied collection of photographs and plenty of ideas for another session. The combination of beautiful evening light, calm conditions and the striking coastal landscape made the long journey worthwhile.
